Chelsea Cogan, PhD

I see clients in person and via telehealth Tuesday - Thursday. I can work with telehealth clients located in Maine or any other PSYPACT participating state.

My approach to therapy is person-centered and empirically informed. I work to understand you, your values, and your concerns so that we can collaboratively build a treatment approach to meet your needs. I understand every individual is multi-faceted and impacted by societal and contextual influences, and my work as your therapist is to assist you in integrating these factors in your path forward.

I utilize multiple modalities of treatment in my work, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I am trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD, Prolonged Exposure (PE) for PTSD, Exposure, Relaxation, and Rescripting Therapy (ERRT) for post-trauma nightmares, DBT, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).

I specialize in working with adults seeking therapy for trauma-related concerns. This includes PTSD, but can also include difficulties regulating emotions, tolerating distress, handling interpersonal conflict, and suicidal thoughts/behaviors.

I see clients in person and via telehealth Monday - Thursday. I can work with telehealth clients located in Maine or any other PSYPACT participating state.

I aim for clients to feel comfortable, safe, and empowered in our work together. I provide space for clients to reflect, connect, and also consider how oppressive structures may be contributing to their distress. In addition to attuned and skillful therapy, I am committed to attending to the socio-political context that shapes individuals' experiences and the role of power dynamics in mental health.

My approach to treatment is grounded in humanistic, psychodynamic, and solutions-focused therapy. I prioritize practical problem-solving and helping clients use their strengths to identify effective solutions to challenges. I believe that clients are experts on their own lives and have the inherent capacity to find solutions that work for them. My role as a therapist is to support and guide them in this process.

Cultural responsiveness is a crucial component of my work as a psychologist. I understand that culture shapes our experiences and beliefs, and I strive to honor and respect the cultural backgrounds of my clients. I work to create a collaborative, culturally sensitive space where clients can explore and navigate the intersection of their cultural identity and mental health concerns.

I have specialized experience working with college student populations and adults struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, adjustment, stress, and substance use disorders. I prioritize creating a safe and welcoming environment where clients can feel seen, heard, and validated in their identities. I am also committed to providing LGBTQ+ affirming and gender-affirming therapy, as I recognize the unique challenges that members of these communities face in seeking mental health care.

Overall, my approach to therapy is founded in empathy, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to empowering my clients. I believe that every individual has the potential to thrive, and I am honored to support my clients in realizing their full potential.

My schedule is currently full but I maintain a small (5-10 people) waitlist that currently has open spots. I recommend continuing to explore other referrals even if you are on my waitlist as I can’t guarantee when I will have a new opening in my schedule.

My hope for therapy is to create an active, collaborative relationship where clients define their goals for treatment and we work together using our individual and shared knowledge and strengths to find the best path forward. I emphasize open communication, mental and emotional flexibility, identities as strengths, and an orientation towards understanding processes rather than finding static “solutions”.

I often focus on helping clients connect with their values, with the understanding that greater agreement between values and actions often leads to a greater sense of fulfillment, meaning, and quality of life, as well as more capacity to cope with difficult circumstances. My work is grounded in the reality that our contexts (many of which we have not chosen) have an immeasurable impact on our lives.

I integrate frameworks and strategies from multiple evidence-based approaches, including Community Psychology, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), with a strong emphasis on identity, context, systems, and structural forces.

I am trained in Inference Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) for OCD and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD.

I specialize in working with adults seeking therapy for OCD, trauma, ADHD, identity and values, and anxiety. I particularly enjoy working with college students and young adults.

In addition to my work at Maine Therapy Collective, I also teach in the Department of Psychology at Colby College, see clients through Oasis Free Clinics, and serve as a Member at Large on the Maine Psychological Association (MePA)’s Policy Council.
